There are many reasons for this, but i suppose i wanted to comment on it. i have been working on a lot of things: 1) reference/inspiration sketchbook full of images that inform my work and that inspire me 2) large drawing for class (3foot by 8foot charcoal drawing of a branch) 3) photo project (see below) 4) printmaking projects for school 5) color wheel project for class. And much, much more.
i will try to post some images soon of some of these things, as well as any other projects i have been working on. (i made a hand-bound sketchbook for a friend and fellow art student.)

More to come. And as for the daily drawings.... i will do what i can. i will just start posting images like that but will call them "sketchbook..." with the date. i don't think pressuring myself to draw something that i find worthy of posting is going to help me right now. Pressure enough with school back in session.genevievehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06590790810621108562noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-53442715269420620.post-45808612474336611092010-01-09T19:23:00.001-08:002010-01-09T19:23:09.714-08:00And...
The work will pop up after this post, maybe not in order, but i will do my best.
This series is titled "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World," after the novel of the same title by Haruki Murakami that inspired the work.
See the entire series after the jump.
(i have no idea what happened to my copy shots- many are out of focus, and the originals are definitely not. Bear with me.)
i also have no idea what happened to my list of titles, so i am going to wing it.
This assignment was inspired by Rene Magritte's drawings of the same subject. Magritte would often paint or draw common interior scenes (a bedroom, etc) that contained, for example, a giant wineglass, or eyeglasses, for a surreal effect.
This is my own boot in the hallway of the Fine Arts building.
It was not a particularly creative assignment, but i took my own liberties with it, and went nuts. It started as a drawing of the studio at school, and once my professor gave me permission to be creative with the 'extra' space, i just let myself meander around the space and this is what i came up with.
(Sorry for the wretched copy shot)
These are shapes, lines and figures that appear rather often in my work. When i started to think about these things i make, i meandered into the concept of what it would look like if Louise Bourgeois and Hans Bellmer collaborated on a drawing. i think it would look a little like this (though, by no means does my work pay adequate homage to either one of them).
First of many....

Daily Drawing 12-27-09
It took many many hours. Silverpoint is a very challenging medium, but i am pleased with the results. i can't wait for the silver to oxidize and darken. This photo is slightly deceptive, as the value of the silver is pretty light right now, probably akin to the result of a 2H or 4H graphite pencil, but it should darken up with time and i estimate will look probably like it does in this photo.

The assignment was to first make a master copy. i chose Leonardo da Vinci's "Antique Warrior". We were required to make the copy in the same size and medium as the original. For the second part, we were to create an original drawing in the same size and medium, utilizing the master artist's style.
i wanted to create a juxtaposition and a reflection between the two soldiers and create an implicit dialogue about the history of warfare, and place the emphasis on the individual man participating.

A note on silverpoint: essentially this technique predates the pencil. It was used in da Vinci's time quite a bit. One uses a fine silver (about .999) wire, (i used a 12 gauge wire) that is cut into a short length and filed and sanded to a point, but rounded like a pencil tip. This is also a polished point in order to prevent actually scratching. The tip should be smooth.

This is placed in a lead holder (not unlike a mechanical pencil) and the point is used to draw. The surface must be prepared with some sort of ground or gesso that will allow the silver to deposit onto its surface. In da Vinci's time, i believe they used a mixture with ground bones. i used Golden brand silverpoint ground medium on a very fine 300lb hot press watercolor paper that was mounted to board for stiffness.
